NSM Alum, School Trustee Selected for Leadership Program

A Harris County Department of Education trustee and NSM alum was among three dozen Texas school board members chosen for special leadership training this year.

Raymond T. Garcia, president of the HCDE board of trustees, graduated from UH in 1964 with bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and petroleum engineering. He received a master’s in business administration from UH in 1988.

Garcia, who was elected to the board in 1994, traveled to Austin in November to attend the second of five leadership training sessions held by the Texas Association of School Boards.

The training is part of a yearlong program in which a few selected school board members from across the state learn more about the role of advocacy in achieving educational excellence, and the group heard from state legislators and experts in leadership development.

Garcia is the owner of R.T. Garcia & Co. Inc. He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the Houston Geological Society. He also serves on UH’s Honors College Advisory Board.
