The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics expanded its global reach with a new joint degree program in partnership with a top Chinese university.
Officials from China University of Geosciences (CUG) in Beijing came to Houston in January to meet with UH administrators and sign an agreement for a joint Ph.D. in geology and geophysics. CUG is one of China’s leading universities. It plays a key role in China’s oil and mining industry and counts the nation’s premier among its many prominent alums.
Under the agreement, up to 20 CUG students would be selected for the joint Ph.D. program. They would spend their first year in Beijing and the next three years at UH. The doctoral students would have a faculty advisor at each school and upon graduation would receive degrees from both institutions.
The students would be funded by CUG and provide UH with a pre-screened batch of highly qualified Ph.D. students. The delegation from China, led by CUG Vice President Wang Cong, met with UH President Renu Khator; NSM Dean John Bear; John Casey, chair of UH’s department of earth & atmospheric science; and Jerald Strickland, UH assistant vice chancellor for international programs. |
