Three University of Houston geophysics students were awarded scholarships after winning an essay contest sponsored by Paradigm, a global energy software company.

The Paradigm Geoscience Futures scholarships, which range from $2,000 to $10,000, were given to Gabriel Gil, Olabode Omoboya and Shawn Wright. To win, students wrote essays after attending presentations at the Paradigm booth at the annual meeting of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists held in Houston last October.

Former Paradigm CEO John Gibson, a UH geology alum, visited the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in December to present the scholarships on behalf of the company. Gibson, who received his master’s degree in geology from UH, has been an active supporter of NSM. He serves on the NSM dean’s advisory board and in 2008 delivered the commencement address at the college’s graduation ceremony.
