UH Student Chemistry Chapter Rated Among Nation’s Best

The University of Houston student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) was honored for its active membership and community outreach with the ACS Outstanding Chapter Award.

The award, announced this fall, places the UH group among the best student chapters in the country. Each year, only about 25-30 of approximately 1000 chapters are rated Outstanding. The group will be recognized and presented a plaque at an awards ceremony during the national ACS meeting next spring in Anaheim.

It is the first time the UH chapter was designated Outstanding – for the previous four years the group was rated Commendable, the second-highest honor. Judges praised the chemistry students’ outreach initiatives – such as chemistry demonstrations and hands-on activities for children at schools and at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, tutoring students in chemistry classes and raising environmental awareness.

Also, during National Chemistry Week, the group hosts various events to educate the campus and community about the practical applications of science and chemistry.
