Hamill Foundation Funds Geoscience Scholarships

The Hamill Foundation is giving a helping hand to aspiring geologists with a scholarship gift of $40,000 to the University of Houston.

The scholarships were designated for the most outstanding undergraduate students in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. Ten Hamill scholarship recipients were announced at the department’s award ceremony at the end of the spring semester and each will get $5,000 or $2,500.

The Hamill Foundation was established by the late Houston oilman Claud Hamill and his wife Marie. The Foundation directors, all personally selected by the Hamills, remain committed to the couple’s wishes by supporting causes near and dear to the Hamills’ hearts. The foundation gives grants to education, scientific and charitable organizations in the Houston area.

Also announced at the geoscience award ceremony were the recipients of two $5,000 scholarships funded by the British American Foundation of Texas. Like the Hamill scholarships, these gifts were earmarked for top geology undergraduates.

Established by the British American Business Council, the foundation provides financial assistance to academically gifted high school, undergraduate and post-graduate students. The foundation also works to strengthen cultural and educational ties between the U.S. and the United Kingdom.
