University of Houston computer science students who advanced to the final round of a national game development competition have been drawing local media attention, most recently from Houston’s ABC affiliate station.

Two UH teams were among the top 10 finalists in the U.S. Imagine Cup, a national game design competition that draws thousands of America’s brightest young techies. They will compete April 26 in Washington, DC against finalists from Yale University, the University of Southern California and other schools for a first prize of $8,000.

UH was the only school with two teams in the top 10, underscoring the rapid progress of the university’s relatively new gaming program. The gaming curriculum consists of four courses and plans are underway to offer a master’s degree in computer science with a concentration on game development in the near future.

The theme of the game design competition was to “imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems” as poverty and environmental sustainability. Using the United Nations Millennium Development Goals as guidance, teams were encouraged to have fun while tackling global issues.
