Chemistry Research Team Wins National Recognition

Two UH chemistry graduate students who presented their research at this fall’s American Chemical Society meeting in Boston were won Best Poster awards.

Roderick Pernites and Nicel Estillore, both of whom work under Rigoberto Advincula, professor of chemistry, received the award in the ACS Colloids Division. It is rare for two awards to go to one research group.

Pernites’ research involved developing superhydrophobic surfaces that may have applications in the oil industry and Estillore’s work deals with the preparation of colloidal particles of unconventional methods using polymer brushes for the medical field.

The awards are among the most recent honors for Advincula and his research team. Advincula oversees a busy lab on the cutting-edge of the design and fabrication of polymers and nanomaterials.

At the same ACS meeting in Boston Advincula was honored as an ACS Fellow for his accomplishments in research and in mentoring young chemists. As a research advisor he has supervised nearly three dozen Ph.D. students as well as 50 undergraduates.
