Several University of Houston undergraduates presented their biomedical research projects last month at the 11th Annual Houston Premedical Academy Research Symposium.
The symposium features the work of undergraduate and high school students who completed a summer research experience. The program is part of the Houston Premedical Academy, a partnership between UH, Baylor College of Medicine and the DeBakey High School for Health Professions.
The Academy cultivates top DeBakey students interested in becoming physicians, channeling them to UH for undergraduate coursework and then on to Baylor. The annual symposium is held to foster students’ interest in research and academic medicine.
UH student Ilyas Patanam won first prize in the research poster contest for his project entitled “Inhibiting Insulin Receptor Signaling in MDA-468 Cells.”
Roya Zamani and Diana Herrera received second and third place, respectively.
Zamani, a freshman biology and biochemistry major, was also among three students given the special distinction of delivering oral presentations at the symposium. She follows in her older brother’s footsteps. Last year, Nader Zamani – a 2010 NSM graduate and co-valedictorian now enrolled in Baylor – delivered an oral research presentation at the symposium. His presentation won first place that year. |
