Brett Wick, who graduated from the University of Houston in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, was recently hired as an assistant professor of mathematics at the Georgia Institute of Technology, also known as Georgia Tech. In August he received a Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers in recognition of his work in complex function theory. During the fellowship he will work at the University of Paderborn in Germany. Wick earned a Ph.D. in math from Brown University.

Lisa Buckner, who received a master’s degree in geophysics from UH in 1991, was recently promoted to Seismic Data Team Leader with the Hess Corporation in Houston. She will continue working in her area of expertise – seismic data processing.

Carlos Huerta, a 2003 UH graduate in biochemistry, is now working on his Ph.D. in molecular biophysics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He recently authored a paper published in the Journal of Molecular Biology and his article was featured on the cover. Huerta credits a course at UH taught by assistant professor James Briggs with sparking his interest in protein function, ultimately leading him to pursue graduate school. He will be graduating this fall.

Douglas Collins, who graduated in 1990 with a bachelor of science degree in geology, is currently a staff geologist with Shell Canada Ltd. in Calgary, Alberta.
