Summer Institute for High School Physics Teachers

High school physics teachers from various Houston-area school districts learned about nanomaterials-based solar cells in the lab of UH physics associate professor Oomann K. Varghese. The two-week summer institute, which included opportunities to explore UH research labs, was designed to improve the teachers’ physics content knowledge and instructional strategies. Follow up sessions will be held throughout the year as part of the STEM Teaching Equity Project-Physics.

NSM Volunteers for Cougar Movers

Dean Dan E. Wells assists Jaime Segura, nutrition major (front seat), and Nick DeSalvo, computer science and math, during residential housing move-in. NSM faculty and staff volunteered as part of the three-day “Cougar Movers” event.

Computer Science Career Fair

Twenty-eight companies participated in the Fall 2013 Computer Science Career Fair giving 170 students the opportunity to connect with potential employers. The event is organized in fall and spring by CougarCS computer science club and the Department of Computer Science.

Bio Community Outreach Event

Dean Dan E. Wells hosted members of the Indian community for a tour of the biology labs, mini-lectures from three faculty from the Department of Biology and Biochemistry, and lunch with the faculty for questions and answers.

Energy Series Debate Begins with Hydraulic Fracturing

NSM at Society for Exploration Geophysicists

Dean Dan E. Wells and Rosemarie Geetan of BP enjoy the NSM reception held in conjunction with the SEG International Exposition and 83rd Annual Meeting. BP and WesternGeco were underwriters of NSM’s event which was attended by more than 120 alumni, friends, faculty and students in September.

Linda and Patrick Magill Host NSM Medical Alumni Reception

NSM alumna Dr. Linda Magill and Patrick Magill (Bauer alumnus – far right) hosted a reception for NSM medical alumni in their home on October 5.
