Prominent Alum, Spouse Endow Scholarship

Louis Green, a prominent surgeon and NSM alum, and his wife endowed a scholarship earlier this year for pre-medical students.

The couple made a gift in June to establish the Louis H. Green, M.D., and Barbara Schachtel-Green, Ph.D. Endowed Scholarship for Pre-Medical Students.

Green graduated from UH in 1943 with a degree in biology and earned a medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. During a 32-year career, he was affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine, where he served as clinical professor of surgery, and Methodist Hospital.

He is a past president of the UH Alumni Organization and was named a distinguished alumnus in 1989. In 2005 Green delivered the NSM commencement address. Last spring he delivered the keynote address at NSM's annual dinner honoring its summa cum laude graduates, faculty award winners and donors.

Schachtel-Green is a 1967 graduate of UH's College of Social Sciences.
