Prominent Computer Scientist Addresses NSM Students, Faculty

A computer scientist who holds an endowed professorship at Texas A&M University spoke to NSM students and faculty last month about increasingly complex computer processors and the tasks they can accomplish.

Valerie Taylor, the computer science and computer engineering department head at A&M and the Royce E. Wisenbaker Professor in Engineering, delivered the last installment of the 2007 College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Dean’s Lecture Series.

With computer systems becoming more complex – using multiple processes on a single chip and multiple chips to maximize computing power – performance is more important than ever, Taylor said. She discussed problems that require good computing performance and some different approaches to achieving good performance on current computer systems.

These talks are designed to expose minority students to the possibilities of research and encourage them to pursue graduate studies in science and engineering. It was sponsored by the NSM Office of the Dean, the Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) and the Houston-Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (H-LAMP).
